Telangana Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao today laid the foundation stone for the construction of 6,000 houses under the flagship free double-bedroom scheme at Rampally in Medchal Malkajgiri district.
Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy, MP Malla Reddy, MLA Sudhir Reddy, GHMC Mayor B Rammohan, GHMC Commissioner Janardhan Reddy and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, KTR said that the housing scheme would help the poor get permanent shelter and lead better lives. "While the government spends about Rs 8.65 lakhs per double bedroom house, it costs around Rs 30 lakhs in the open market. This is a great scheme being implemented by the Telangana government," KTR said.
The minister claimed that only the TRS government was constructing such houses for the poor in the country. It was planning to spend Rs 18,000 crores for constructing 2.65 lakh houses for the poor in the state including one lakh houses in Hyderabad and the rest in the other districts, the minister added.
Separately, Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav too laid the foundation for the construction of 210 houses to be built at a cost of Rs 17.85 crores at Indira Nagar in Khairatabad.
At a function also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Mohd Mahamood Ali, Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Union Labour & Employment Minister Bandaru attatreya, MLA Ch Ramachandra Reddy and others, the minister said that the people of the locality were lucky as they would get the houses in one year and celebrate the next Vinayaka Chaviti festival in their new homes. The new houses were coming up in the heart of the city abutting Necklace Road near the location of the world-famous Khairatabad Ganesh idol, he said.
Yadav asked the contractor to complete the construction works and hand over the houses within one year. Though the beneficiaries had delayed vacating the place for the GHMC, it was eventually done and the foundation had now been laid for the project, he said.
He added that the beneficiaries would form a committee to ensure the speedy completion of the works.
Dattatraya said that the people in the locality were fortunate as their dream of having a permanent house was coming true. The Centre would extend support to the state government in providing double bedroom houses for the poor, he said.
