Cyberabad Police Commissioner C V Anand on Friday instructed cab operators to appoint drivers only after verifying their antecedents.
Speaking to media persons later, Anand said that nearly 25,000 cabs were operating in the Cyberabad and Hyderabad Commissionerate limits, while another 20,000 cabs were operating in the Ranga Reddy district.
During the meeting with some owners and drivers, he said that their feedback was taken to ensure the security of passengers, especially women, travelling in cabs.
He said that there were two types of cabs operating in the city. While the first category of cabs were being monitored live through GPS/GPRS, those in the second category had tourists' taxi licenses.
The Commissioner said that a few cab owners were not verifying the antecedents of the drivers before hiring them. Therefore, they had been asked to take precautions in hiring drivers and to adhere to the rules.
He also proposed some amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act to bring all cabs under its purview.
According to sources, the Cyberabad Police is planning to introduce a sticker from January 1 which would act as a certification of the verification of the documents and antecedents of the cab operators and drivers. (INN)
