Tension prevailed throughout the day today as farmers in large numbers laid siege to the district Collectorate in Kamareddy, protesting the proposed urban masterplan.
Demanding the immediate withdrawal of the masterplan, farmers began with a rally from the CSI Grounds in Kamareddy town and reached the new Collectorate where they started staging their protest.
With the police refusing entry to the farmers to the Collectorate for giving a representation to the district Collector, tension prevailed at the site.
The police placed barricades in front of the Collectorate and deployed heavy security, restricting entry into the building.
The farmers said that they had been agitating for a month against the new industrial master plan in Kamareddy town, and that the district administration was not taking their demands into consideration.
They said that agricultural lands should not be included in the masterplan, and that the plan should not be approved without resolving their problems.
With the district Collector reportedly adamant about not meeting the farmers, the agitators are continuing the protest.
