The Union Home Ministry has suspended IPS trainee K V Maheshwar Reddy for allegedly torturing his wife Bhavana Birudula, who lodged a complaint against the former with the Jawahar Nagar police station.
The police had registered an FIR against Maheshwar Reddy on October 27 under Sections 498A, 323 and 506 of the IPC, and some sections of the SC/ST POA Act.
Upon receiving communications from the UPSC, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Police Academy, the Union Home Ministry placed Maheswara Reddy under suspension in view of the above criminal cases against him pending investigation and trial.
The offer of appointment to him dated December 2, 2019, was suspended.
However, if Reddy gets cleared of the accusations of crime, the offer of appointment will be reinstated by the ministry, and he will be able to join the basic training course at SVPNPA, Hyderabad, without loss of seniority.
A native of Kadapa district, Maheshwar Reddy achieved the 126th rank in the UPSC civil services selection exams and got elected for the IPS. He completed the preliminary training in Missourie.
While studying engineering in the Osmania University, Reddy reportedly became friends with Bhavana Birudula of Keesara, and married her in a Sub-Registrar of Marriages office in February last year after an eight-year love affair.
In her complaint to the police, Birudula alleged that Reddy, after being selected for the IPS, started planning to divorce her and marry another woman.
