A hearing was held in the High Court today regarding animal slaughter during Bakrid.
A bench of the High Court took suo moto cognisance of a letter written by Yuga Tulsi Foundation founder Sivakumar.
The letter claimed that cow slaughter was being done to hurt Hindu religious sentiments.
The High Court said that it was not appropriate to write such a letter a day before Bakrid to take action against cow slaughter, and asked how it (the court) could be dragged into such sensitive issues at the last minute.
Advocate General B S Prasad told the court that all possible measures had been taken to control the illegal transportation of cows and other cattle including setting up of check posts. He also said that the government was registering cases against violators.
The High Court thereupon ordered the State government to take steps to implement the Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act in the State, and said that the Chief Secretary and the DGP should take steps for the strict enforcement of the Act. It also said that steps should be taken to maintain law and order, and that Bakrid should be celebrated in true spirit.
The court also issued directions to the CS and DGP to submit their reports on August 2 on the issue.
