BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy today got relief from the Telangana High Court.
The High Court issued orders to the police not to arrest the MLA in a case registered against him at the Subedari police station, till Monday (April 28).
However, the High Court clarified that the investigation in the case could continue, and that the MLA should cooperate with the police.
A case had been registered against Reddy for threatening a quarry owner named Katta Manoj and demanding Rs 50 lakh.
Manoj's wife Umadevi filed a complaint over that at the Subedari police station, and the police registered a case against the MLA.
Following this, Reddy approached the High Court seeking dismissal of the case. The BRS MLA's petition was heard in the High Court today (April 24).
Reddy's lawyer argued in the court that the case was registered due to political motives. He said that the BRS' silver jubilee celebrations were to be held in Elkathurthi on April 27, and this case was an excuse to keep Reddy out of it.
The High Court asked the Public Prosecutor if there was any testimony that Manoj, who ran a quarry in Vangapalli of Kamalapuram mandal, had paid Rs 25 lakh to Kaushik Reddy on October 25, 2023, as alleged in the case.
The PP said that Manoj had indeed paid Rs 25 lakh to Reddy after being threatened, and that Manoj had filed a complaint at the police station after being demanded another Rs 50 lakh.
The court asked the PP why the police had not filed a complaint in 2023 itself, and ordered that Reddy not be arrested until the next hearing on the 28th of this month.
