The Telugu Desam Party on Saturday requested the State Election Commission to order fresh delimitations of the wards of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) before beginning the process of the municipal elections.
In a representation made to the SEC, TDP floor leader in GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy complained of variation in the election wards of the GHMC.
"The population is not uniformly divided in each. While some wards have only 18,000 in population, others have more than 50,000," he said.
However, while providing beneficial perks and funds for the development of the wards, the authorities of the GHMC, APCPDCL, HMWS&SB, HMDA and other departments were providing the same quantum of funds to all the 150 wards of the GHMC, he stated.
"Most of the current wards had been created based on the volume of the population recorded as per the 2011 Census in the GHMC, duly implementing the rules of reservation for BCs, SCs, STs and OCs. Subsequently, the elections wards were increased from the earlier 100 to 150, as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation was created by merging 12 surrounding municipalities," Singireddy said.
Singireddy said that since the GHMC elections should be held within 3 months before the date of retirement of the existing corporators, i. e. before December 4, 2014, as per Section 7 (1) of the HMC Act, 1955, the State Election Commission should initiate fresh delimitation of wards immediately.
