Secunderabad MP G Kishan Reddy, inducted into the union cabinet on May 30 as a Minister of State, was today allotted the portfolio of Home Affairs.
The office of the President of India issued a press release after the allotment.
Reddy was sworn in as a Minister of State in New Delhi on Thursday in Rastrapathi Bhavan. He was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Secunderabad constituency in the April-May general elections, becoming an MP for the first time in his career. Earlier, he had worked as an MLA thrice.
Reddy will be deputy to Amit Shah, who is the cabinet minister for Home Affairs.
Another person from Telangana, Ch Vidyasagar Rao, was once Union Minister of State for Home Affairs (from the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh).
Born in Ranga Reddy district in 1960, Kishan Reddy was inspired by Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan. He started his political career in 1977 as an ordinary worker in the Janata Party. He served as the president of the BJP in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh, and was also the national president of the BJYM, the BJP's youth wing. He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly in 2004 from the Himayatnagar constituency. He was later elected twice to the Assembly from the Amberpet constituency (in 2009 and 2014). However, he lost the Assembly election held in December 2018 for the same seat. Later, he contested the Lok Sabha elections for the Secunderabad seat, and won.
