Activists of various civil society organizations on Saturday held a massive protest in front of the Shadnagar police station where the four accused in the
rape and murder of veterinary doctor Priyanka Reddy were kept.
Hundreds of students and local residents gathered at the police station and squatted on the road bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.
The irate protestors demanded that the police hand over the accused to them to punish them in full public view. They raised slogans against the State government and the police.
At one point, they also tried to crash into the police station to lynch the four, escalating tension in the area. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the activists and the general public from the area.
The activists however did not stop, and hung around to pelt stones at the police van carrying the accused to a central prison.
Meanwhile, a Shadnagar court sent the accused to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.
