The Congress today held a protest in front of the L B Nagar DCP's office demanding the immediate arrest of suspended Marredpally Circle Inspector Nageswara Rao, an accused in a rape and kidnap case filed by Vanasthalipuram Police, and on the run currently.
Congress leader from the L B Nagar Assembly constituency Malreddy Ram Reddy led the protest.
State Youth Congress president Sivasena Reddy, DCC president Challa Narasimha Reddy, corporator Darpally Rajasekhar, and party leaders Sudheer Reddy, Janga Reddy and Bhaskar also took part in the protest.
Speaking on the occasion, the Congress leaders warned the State government that they would organise similar protests at all police stations in the State if the CI was not arrested by Monday.
They also lodged a missing persons complaint against Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali.
Separately, TPCC senior vice-president G Niranjan demanded that the State government order a judicial inquiry into the case and initiate stringent action against the Inspector.
"Such heinous acts by police officials are shameful for the police department and also the State government. It shows that the women of the State are not safe even with the police, and cannot feel secure even to go to police stations to lodge a complaint," Niranjan said.
"It is also surprising how the inspector escaped from the police station as soon as an enquiry team reached it. This indicates the doubtful integrity of the enquiry team," he added.
