In the wake of multiple recent incidents of kids falling under water tankers and dying, Anil Kumar, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad, today convened a meeting with the owners and operators of private water tankers and officials of the GHMC, the RTA and the HMWS&SB at the Police Control Room, Nampally.
Kumar interacted with the water tanker owners/operators and informed them about the safety precautions to be taken to avoid road accidents in the city.
He informed them that vehicles/tankers older than 15 years should not move on the city roads, and that any such vehicles found on the roads would be handed over to RTA for further action. He also said that many water tankers were moving in the city without proper permissions from the concerned authorities, and that a letter would be addressed to the revenue and water works authorities to keep surveillance on such illegal water tankers.
He also urged the owners/operators to install speed locks in their vehicles to maintain speed limits, and regularly get their vehicles to undergo fitness checks at the RTO and get fitness certificates.
Also, before employing drivers, the owners should thoroughly verify the formers' antecedents, and later monitor the behaviours of the drivers regularly, Kumar said. He also suggested that a helper/cleaner always accompany the vehicle to avoid accidents when the vehicle was manouvering.
The Addl CP also requested the water tanker owners to avoid trips during school hours in school zones, and to reduce trips during peak hours.
