An incident of drunken driving in Vanasthalipuram's B N Reddy Nagar today left one dead and two others injured.
The accident took place at around 4 am this morning, when an inebriated driver, identified as Gautam, was driving with two of his friends from L B Nagar towards Ibrahimpatnam. Their car (TS05FH2356) collided head-on with the pole of a traffic signal while approaching B N Reddy Nagar. This caused it to hit the road median.
Sandeep Reddy, a software employee from Ibrahimpatnam, who was seated in the back seat of the car died on the spot. His body was then taken to a local government hospital.
The police reached the spot after onlookers and locals informed them of the accident. They were able to apprehend Gautam.
Speaking on the matter, Vanasthalipuram ACP Purushottam said that the accident was caused because the driver was intoxicated. A case has been registered against Gautam under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
However, Mallikarjun, Gautam's second co-passenger, is still absconding. Reports say that he fled from the scene after the accident occurred. He is a constable.
The unfortunate incident is but one among the many accidents caused by drunken driving. This has been a persistent issue on the streets of Hyderabad. Just last month, the Cyberabad Traffic Police had
nabbed as many as 177 people for violating the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and booked 137 bikers, and 9 autorickshaws and 31 car drivers, under drunken driving cases.
