Following the
rampant increase in drunk driving accidents in Hyderabad, the traffic police in Telangana's capital have increased checking to stop the people of the city from driving under the influence of alcohol in an effort to prevent such accidents and improve road safety.
Due to the continuing efforts of the City Traffic Police, a total of 2,049 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol in the month of March alone.
The police have filed 1,917 charge sheets against the accused. The latter have also been produced for hearings in the 3rd and 4th Metropolitan Magistrate Courts in Nampally.
Of the total accused, the presiding officers of the two courts sentenced 58 to imprisonment - the accused were all sent to Chanchalguda Jail. While 3 were imprisoned for 9 days, 10 were sentenced to a week in jail. 25 others were jailed for 5 days, 20 for 2 days. 14 other accused persons were sentenced to standing punishment till the Rising of the Court.
The two courts also imposed fines totalling Rs 1,99,56,300 on the remaining 1,859 accused.
The police have reportedly said that they will soon produce the remaining 132 violators in court after filing charge sheets against them. Officials also added that those had been convicted in drunken driving and other traffic violation cases would likely face difficulties in getting government jobs, and passport and visa clearances.
