The special drive being conducted by the Hyderabad police to check drunken driving in the state capital is often proving to be fatal to the lives of the police officials who have been engaged in the effort.
Many drunken drivers do not hesitate in mowing down the police with their vehicles to avoid getting caught.
In exactly that sort of unfortunate development, a drunken driver hit an ASI of the Kukatpally police station, Mahipal Reddy. The collision caused the ASI to sustain grievous injuries. Reddy is currently battling for his life at Kondapur's KIMS hospital.
The police revealed that Reddy, along with his team, was conducting a routine DUI check at the Kolan Raghava Reddy Gardens on Nizampet Road at 11 pm on Saturday, March 17.
When the ASI tried to stop the vehicle of the accused so that the breathalyser test could be conducted on him, the scared driver tried to flee. In his attempt to do so, the accused drove his car onto the ASI and a few other police staff, and injured them seriously.
In a separate incident, another reckless driver recently hit a home guard in the same area. Fortunately, the victim only sustained minor injuries. He has been shifted to Holistic Hospitals for treatment.
Following the rampant increase in drunk driving accidents in Hyderabad, the Cyberabad Traffic Police has been steadily
increasing checking to stop the people of the city from driving under the influence of alcohol in an effort to prevent such accidents.
