Tensions escalated near Lower Tank Bund in Hyderabad today due to the protest of Group-1 exam aspirants.
Chaos erupted during the rally organized by the candidates due to it turning into a fracas between the BRS and the BJP.
While the Group-1 candidates were marching towards the Secretariat with Union minister Bandi Sanjay, BRS leaders also joined the rally. Srinivas Goud, R S Praveen and Dasoju Sravan, who joined the rally, faced opposition, with the BJP leaders confronting them. A scuffle broke out between the BRS and BJP leaders. As ABVP activists blocked the BRS leaders, the situation intensified, resulting in the rally splitting into two groups.
Sanjay went to the Ashok Nagar chowrastha in Hyderabad. He assured the Group-1 candidates that he would support them, and set out in a rally along with them towards the Secretariat, but the police obstructed their path.
Sanjay expressed anger at the police actions, and warned them that he would meet the Chief Minister. When the police then retreated, he continued to move towards the Secretariat with the rally. He demanded that the government think with humanity and revoke GO 29. He asked why GO 29 was issued, and if the government intended to even abolish the reservation system. "The government must relent. The police's lathi-charge on Group-1 candidates is unacceptable," he said, and added that Revanth Reddy's governance resembled that of the erstwhile Nizam. He also claimed that the government was misleading the court and must respect the High Court's ruling.
The police stopped Sanjay again near Lower Tank Bund and took him into custody. They bundled him into a vehicle and took him away. The Group-1 candidates tried to block the police vehicle, leading to a scuffle between the police and the Group-1 candidates. The police dispersed the candidates.
Meanwhile, at the Telugu Talli flyover, the police arrested the BRS leaders in succession. Former minister Srinivas Goud demanded revocation of GO No 29. He also said that students had no affiliation with any party. "Politicians should not interfere with students, and must focus on the future of the students. All the parties will fight for the students' rights. The government should engage in immediate discussions with them," he said.
