In a significant move to push ahead with its flagship project of free intensive KG-to-PG education, the Telangana government has taken a bold decision to offer free education to Intermediate students studying in its colleges across the state.
The Intermediate Board will bear the cumulative Rs. 9-crore fee amount instead of collecting it from the students, and will go online from July 1 to offer 22 services.
The 1.15 lakh students of the 402 government junior colleges in the state will get free education with waiver of the fees, as also textbooks free of cost. With another 15,000 students likely to join these colleges, the total number of students may go up to 1.30 lakhs.
This was announced to the media by Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari, who is also the minister in charge of education, at the Board for Intermediate Education office.
He also said that the state government would issue a notification to fill the vacant lecturer posts besides regularizing the services of contract lecturers based on their eligibility.
He said that the government was focusing on keeping a tab on corruption, and would avoid delays in processes. Towards this the government had initiated steps to revamp the structure of the Board for Intermediate Education to root out corruption.
The TRS government was ready to equip the Board to surpass private colleges in providing quality education, he said, adding that to prevent corrupt practices in the Board, the government favored the introduction of online services.
Admitting that there was corruption in the department, the Deputy CM warned that the government would take stringent measures against the erring staff and officials.
He exuded confidence that the decision of free education would be highly beneficial to poor students.
Teaching modules would be prepared to offer training to the lecturers this year, he said, adding that permanent buildings would be constructed during the next academic year. (NSS)
