The Telangana government granted Rs. 10,000 crores to transform residential schools for economically weaker sections in the State into centers of excellence over the next three years, Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari said.
Delivering a keynote address at a three-day principals' conference on Wednesday, Srihari praised Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for sanctioning 255 residential schools this year.
"KCR envisioned the best education for the deprived classes. Now that it has taken flight, it is time the teaching fraternity use the funds to empower backward classes through education," Srihari said.
The Deputy CM also appreciated the school principals for making efforts to help marginalized students secure seats in Open Category in Medicine and Engineering. He asked the teachers' community to put in coordinated efforts to remove the scar of poor standards of education in government run schools and colleges.
The number of the residential schools will rise to 700 next academic year as part of the flagship program "KG-to-PG" to offer free and quality education up to highschool to economically backward students. The government would fill around 14,000 posts in Gurukuls and spend Rs. 3 crores a year to run them, Srihari said.
