Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy pulled up officials on the alleged corruption happening in the municipal body.
The irregularity involves officials drawing additional salaries by registering fake employees. According to a press release from the GHMC, the Commissioner initiated steps to put a check to these bogus employees in the sanitation wing.
As part of the checks, Reddy gathered Aadhaar card numbers and introduced biometric attendance system for employees. He said that salaries would from now on be given through banks.
About 22,000 labourers were working in the sanitation and entomology departments in Greater Hyderabad limits, which are supposedly the largest number in any sanitation wing across the nation.
It was discovered that the actual number of employees was much lower than in the records. This problem, as per reports, also arose because several employees belonging to single families were working with the GHMC and regularly abstained from their duties. The supervisors took advantage of it and took the salary on their in their stead.
Keeping these incidents in view, the Commissioner directed the officials to collect the Aadhaar numbers and bank account numbers from the 18,382 labourers and digitize them.
He also directed them to link Aadhaar numbers to biometric systems in order to check irregularities.
