GHMC Split Into Three Municipal Corporations

The corporations are: a truncated Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation.
Hyderabad | 11th February 2026
In a significant administrative reform aimed at decentralising and strengthening urban governance, the Telangana government has reorganised the civic administration of the Hyderabad region under the Core Urban Region (CURE) framework.

The restructuring was today formalised through GO No 55, issued by the Metropolitan Area & Urban Development (GHMC-1) Department.

As part of the reorganisation, three separate municipal corporations have been constituted by splitting the GHMC: the (truncated) Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation.

The move is intended to enhance administrative efficiency, improve service delivery and ensure focused governance across the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.

Under the revised structure, the GHMC has been reconfigured to function with six zones, 30 circles and 150 wards, covering an extent of approximately 689 square kilometres.

The restructuring has been designed to promote better decentralisation and strengthen field-level administration, and provide more responsive civic services to residents.

To oversee and coordinate the transition process, the government has entrusted Metropolitan Area & Urban Development Department Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan with the additional responsibility of Special Officer for the three municipal corporations.

He will supervise the reorganisation process from the GHMC head office.

Consequent to the reorganisation, R V Karnan has assumed charge as Commissioner of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, to ensure administrative continuity and effective implementation of the restructured governance framework.

Officials said that the reorganisation marked a strategic step toward building a more accountable, citizen-centric and future-ready urban governance system for the Hyderabad metropolitan region.
