Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar today announced that a new tracking system called "Central Equipment Identity Register" (CEIR) would be introduced to trace lost or stolen cell phones.
The various SPs and CPs of the State were made aware of the system through a video conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumar said that the cell phone had become the most widely used electronic gadget, and consequently the number of cases of theft and missing cell phones had also increased significantly.
He therefore advised police officers to spread awareness among the common people in the villages and towns about the CEIR. He said that the system would be launched on May 17, which was World Telecom Day.
Additional DG Mahesh Bhagwat said that police officers were being trained on this system in 750 police stations of the State. He said that awareness programs should be held every day so that anyone who who used a cell phone knew about the CEIR. If someone came to a police station with a cell phone that they found, the receptionist should enter the complete details in the CEIR app. And if someone had lost a cell phone or had it stolen, there would be a high chance of finding it if they registered it in the CEIR by logging in to www.ceir.gov.in and entering the details of the phone.
