Nizamabad MP Madhu Yaskhi, on Monday, pleaded with Chief Minister K Rosaiah to listen to the desires of the people and officially celebrate Telangana Liberation Day. He said that the reluctance by the state government over the day being officially celebrated was 'painful' .
Yaskhi pointed out to media persons at his residence that the Telangana Liberation Day was celebrated in some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka as some parts of these states were also under the Nizam's rule.
The MP said that people of the state have been demanding that the day be officially celebrated, since 5 decades. Yaskhi wondered why the government has objections to do something that people want. The people of Telangana want to celebrate the event in a grand manner, he stated.
Yaskhi said that he does not see anyone looking at the day as an 'anti-minority' day.
Demanding that the government celebrate Telangana Liberation Day officially on September 17 across the state, another Congress MP G Sukender Reddy urged it to lift all cases filed against students who participated in the separate Telangana statehood agitation.
Former minister Jeevan Reddy and Chief whip Bhatti Vikramarka said that if the government did not declare the event as state fete, it could lead to serious repercussions.
Integrationist Whip Sailajanath and former minister Uppunutala Purushottam Reddy said they have no personal objection for celebrating the event as state fete.
"I will take a decision after discussing the issue with the Chief Minister," stated Health minister Danam Nagender.
