Four youths - three from Telangana and one from Andhra Pradesh - who were held hostage and forced to work in a cyber fraud operation in Myanmar were today rescued following the intervention of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
The victims were lured by the promise of high-paying jobs in Bangkok but were instead trafficked and forced into cybercrime.
Acting on the instructions of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sanjay took special initiative to ensure their safe return to India.
One of the victims, Rakesh Reddy from Koheda in Hayatnagar mandal, Ranga Reddy district, shared his harrowing experience. He said a local man, Yash Nath Goud, had promised him a lucrative job in Bangkok and introduced him to Vamsi Krishna, a broker's agent in Jagtial. After being interviewed, Rakesh was taken to what was claimed to be a workplace 200 km from Bangkok.
"I was made to work 16 hours a day in cybercrime. If I refused, they wouldn't even give me food. I worked there for five months. When I resisted, the Chinese operators took away my passport and tortured us. Eventually, they handed us over to the local army, claiming we had entered the country illegally. We were then jailed," he recalled.
Rakesh said that he had learned that Bandi Sanjay had previously helped repatriate other victims from Myanmar, and informed his family. "My father, Yadi Reddy, wrote a letter to Bandi Sanjay, who immediately responded. He contacted the Ministry of External Affairs and took swift action to bring us home. Our family is deeply grateful to him," he said.
Alongside Rakesh, A Sivashankar from Koheda, Kanuri Ganesh from Karimnagar and Akula Guru Yuva Kishore from Andhra Pradesh were also reportedly subjected to extreme torture by cybercrime racketeers in Myanmar. All four have now safely returned home, thanks to efforts from Sanjay's office.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay said that there was credible information that hundreds of Indians, including many youth from the Telugu States, were still trapped in similar conditions in Myanmar. He said that efforts were going on to rescue and bring them all back home.
