Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday decided to support the combined Opposition candidate, former union minister Margaret Alva, in the election for the Vice President post to be held on Saturday.
Announcing the party's decision to extend support to Alva, TRS parliamentary party leader Dr K Keshava Rao advised the party MPs, 16 in number, to vote accordingly.
The BJP-led NDA government already announced former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as its candidate for Vice President.
The Vice President of India, who is the second-highest constitutional authority in the country, is elected through an electoral college consisting of members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
The term of the incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.
