Daughter of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao Surabhi Vani Devi, who was
elected as MLC from the Hyderabad-Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy graduates' constituency this March, was sworn into office today.
Protem Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council M Bhoopal Reddy administered the oath of office to the MLC in his chambers at the Legislative Council on the occasion.
Rajya Sabha member Dr K Kesavarao, Ministers Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Sabita Indra Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, and Vemula Prashanth Reddy, and some MLAs and MLCs were also present during the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Vani Devi thanked the TRS for selecting her as the candidate for the seat. She said that though she had been brought up in a political atmosphere, she believed that no positions were necessary to do public service but that one could render more service when in power.
Vani Devi was elected as the MLC from the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahboobnagar constituency in a bitterly-fought battle. She had clinched the seat by securing 1,49,269 votes, winning by a margin of 36,580 votes. While the BJP candidate for the seat, N Ramchander Rao, had come in as a second, independent candidate K Nageshwar had been a distant third.
With the victory, the ruling party was able to wrest a crucial seat from its rival, the saffron party.
