The jails department of Telangana has turned number one in the country in manufacturing revenues, and even created a record to boot.
The department earned Rs 600 crore from the sale of the goods made by its inmates during 2019.
The distance between the leader and the runner-up is telling - Tamil Nadu earned Rs 73 crore, and Maharashtra, the second runner-up, earned just Rs 29 crore.
These statistics have come to the fore in a report prepared by the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB).
The report revealed that 73% of the total produce was coming from Telangana.
Clearly, the products being manufactured by the convicts of the state have great demand in the market.
The inmates are currently manufacturing sanitizers and face masks, and officials of several government departments like the railways and the municipalities are buying these products.
The convicts are also manufacturing blankets, entrance gates, furniture tables and chairs, soaps and phenyl, with quality on par with that of private companies.
