Senior CPI leader Chandu Naik (43) was fatally shot by unidentified assailants while taking his regular morning walk at Shalivahana Nagar Park in Malakpet this morning.
Originally from Narsaipalli in Balmoor mandal of Nagarkurnool district, Naik had been residing in Malakpet, and was visiting the park as part of his routine when the incident occurred.
Upon learning of the shooting, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chaitanya Kumar promptly arrived at the scene to investigate. He then informed the media that the shooting took place around 7:30 am, and that the deceased was identified as Chandu Naik.
At the time of the attack, Naik was reportedly walking on the track with his wife and daughter when four unidentified men arrived in a white Swift Dzire car. They confronted him and initially threw chili powder at him.
As Naik attempted to flee, the attackers opened fire, discharging six shots at close range. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, collapsed and died instantly.
Investigators suspect the murder may be linked to a land dispute. "We have received information that he was involved in a murder case registered under the jurisdiction of the L B Nagar police station. We are verifying the details," officials said.
Chandu's wife claimed that he had an ongoing conflict with a man named Rajesh affiliated with the CPI (ML), who was from Devaruppala.
Seven bullets were recovered from the scene. Ten police teams have been formed to track down the suspects. A forensic team collected evidence at the site, and Chaitanya Kumar said that all bullets appeared to have been fired from the same weapon.
CCTV footage from the park and nearby areas is being reviewed to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Reports indicate that four individuals have surrendered to the police in connection with the case, though officials have not yet confirmed this development.
