Telangana has secured a massive investment commitment of $1 billion from US pharma major Eli Lilly, which plans to expand its manufacturing and global medicine supply capacity in Hyderabad.
A new manufacturing and quality hub will be established with the investment, creating significant job opportunities for Telangana's youth.
The announcement came after the company's global delegation today met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister for Industries Sridhar Babu at the Integrated Command and Control Centre.
The investment reportedly shows Eli Lilly's confidence in Telangana's leadership and effective governance, following the inauguration of its Global Capability Centre in Hyderabad in August this year. Despite strong interest from several States, the company chose Telangana for its favourable ecosystem - reportedly due to the availability of skilled manpower, world-class infrastructure and proactive government support.
The $1 billion investment shows the company's growing interest in Telangana beyond its GCC, as it is now planning to focus on developing new medicines to treat diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's, cancer and other autoimmune conditions.
With the establishment of the new facilities, Eli Lilly will undertake contract manufacturing in Telangana for global supply. Recruitment for the Hyderabad facility will begin immediately, with openings for engineers, chemists, analytical scientists, quality control and assurance professionals, and managerial roles being advertised.
The Chief Minister thanked the Eli Lilly delegation for choosing Telangana, and assured them of full government support for their future plans.
"Indira Gandhi's initiative in 1965 is the reason why Hyderabad stands as a hub of bulk drug manufacturing. The city was also at the epicentre of global COVID-19 vaccine production," the Chief Minister said, adding, "Telangana means business. Hyderabad is a global city. Our government will support and welcome all industries looking to invest here."
The Chief Minister also outlined plans to transform Telangana into a knowledge hub, and announced that a new Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) was being set up at Hyderabad's Genome Valley to provide technical support to companies. He added that several renowned pharma industrialists had joined the Board of Governors of the Young India Skills University, chaired by Anand Mahindra.
Sridhar Babu said that Eli Lilly's expansion in Hyderabad stood as a testament to Telangana's dynamic industrial landscape and its growing prominence in advanced healthcare manufacturing.
Patrik Jonsson, Executive Vice President of Eli Lilly and President of Lilly International, said that the investment reaffirmed the company's confidence in India as a global hub for capability building within its international network.
