Parliamentary Affairs minister Kamal Nath recommended that stern action be taken against the Seemandhra MPs who resorted to violence in the Lok Sabha during the tabling of the Telangana Bill on Thursday.
"The circumstances that have occurred are a big blot on Parliamentary democracy. While expression of dissent is one thing, this kind of violence is completely unacceptable and undemocratic," Kamal Nath told reporters.
He said that the fundamentals and foundations of Parliamentary democracy have been shaken due to the
violent incidents that took place in the Lok Sabha today.
Describing the incident as very unfortunate, he said he had never witnessed such a thing in the 33 years of his Parliamentary career. "I feel ashamed of it," he said.
"You can accept or reject something. But you cannot and should not suppress other members from expressing their views. Resorting to violence in the House is nothing but anarchy," he said.
Kamal Nath also said that since the incident had occurred in the precincts of Lok Sabha, only Speaker Meira Kumar could decide on the course of action that has to be taken against the erring MPs.
He added that although he hadn't personally witnessed it, he has been informed that Seemandhra MPs had used gas, knife and other kinds of weapons. (INN)
