The unveiling of a portrait of YSR in the Committee Hall of the state Assembly led to objections by the main opposition Telugu Desam Party on Thursday.
Speaking on behalf of the TDP, Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu said that he wanted to know under which rule the portrait was unveiled in the Committee Hall. He pointed out that apart from the portraits of past Speakers and B R Ambedkar, there was no precedent of any portrait of any chief minister adorning the walls of the Committee Hall.
Responding to the points raised by Muddukrishnama Naidu, speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy said that YSR was the only chief minister to have died in office.
He asserted that as a speaker, he was well-versed in the rules and regulations.
Earlier, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu met leaders of the Left parties, the Praja Rajyam Party and the Lok Satta, and requested them to boycott the unveiling ceremony. Naidu said that the presence of the portrait was against the established customs and traditions of the Assembly.
Except for the lone member of the Lok Satta party and the TDP members, the other parties were present at the unveiling ceremony.
The speaker unveiled the portrait, and the ceremony was also attended by Legislative Council Chairman Chakrapani, Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Cabinet Ministers and other members of the house.
