TDP, BJP On Dharna Mode Against GHMC

It was a day of protest at the Greater Hyderabad Muncipal Corporation's Headquarters at Tank Bund.

In protest against the postponement of GHMC's general body meeting scheduled on Saturday, TDP and BJP corporators staged separate protests in the GHMC office premises.

BJP corporators led by floor leader Bangari Prakash staged protests in front of the chambers of GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain demanding his resignation. They alleged that the Mayor postponed the meeting only to prevent C Uday Kumar, the BJP candidate who has been declared elected as per High Court orders, to take oath as Langar Houz corporator.

BJP corporators K Sahadev Yadav, Mettu Vaikuntam, K Uma Ramesh Yadav, Devara Deepa Karunakar Yadav and Uday Kumar also took part in the dharna. Some BJP workers also damaged flower pots and a railing in front of the Mayor's office. They refused to leave the premises unless the Mayor gave them an assurance of convening the general body meeting at the earliest.

Meanwhile, TDP corporators led by floor leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy held a sit-in protest in front of the chambers of GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu.

Singireddy said reporters that the MIM-Congress combine was escaping from its responsibilities of solving civic problems being faced by the people. He alleged that over 600 people had died due to malaria, dengue and other viral diseases in the GHMC limits over the last few months. However, he said that the general body meeting of the GHMC has not been called for the last eight months. Further, the Saturday's meeting was postponed as part of a larger conspiracy.

The TDP leader said that the GHMC's general body meeting could be convened if four members of the Standing Committee and one sixth of 212-member council agree for it. Later, he submitted a memorandum, signed by 44 TDP corporators, to the GHMC Commissioner and Secretary NSS Soma Raju demanding the convening of the general body meeting immediately.

However, the GHMC Commissioner told the TDP corporators that convening the general body was not under his purview, and only the Mayor could take a call on it.

The TDP corporators threatened to stage a dharna at MIM's headquarters at Darussalam, if the GHMC's general body meeting was not convened in the next two days. (INN)
