Tension prevailed near the Telangana Assembly on Wednesday when students belonging to the Left parties marched from Nizam College at the Basheerbagh crossroads to the Assembly in protest against the state government introducing the Private Universities Bill in the House "unilaterally".
However, the "Storm Assembly" rally organized by the SFI, AISF, PDSU, TVV, AIDSO and TSF was foiled by lathi-wielding police personnel.
After irate students and the cops entered into heated arguments and pushed each other first causing tension in the area, the policemen forcibly bundled the students into vans and took them to various police stations in the city.
Student leaders including SFI state secretary Kota Ramesh, AISF state secretary Sivarama Krishna, PDSU state president Joopaka Srinivas, AIDSO state secretary Gangadhar, TVV's Sandeep and TSF state secretary Mohd Shobhan Naik said that the Private universities Bill would do a lot of injustice to SCs, STs, minorities and other poor students due to commercialization of education. The moment the private universities came into being, private colleges would start charging exhorbitant fees and donations, they alleged.
Condemning the "illegal" arrests of the students and the bill, the student leaders announced a universities' bandh on Thursday, and appealed to all university students across the state to make it a grand success.
