Political turmoil continues over the Kancha Gachibowli land issue involving the Hyderabad Central University (HCU).
A group of BJP representatives had announced their plan to visit the HCU today. In response, police were deployed near the Hyderguda MLA Quarters, and several BJP leaders were placed under house arrest.
The BJP has accused the Congress government of facilitating the sale of "university land" and transferring government lands to private individuals, and over the past two days BJP and BJYM leaders have staged protests at the university.
This morning BJP MLAs left the Hyderguda MLA Quarters for the HCU lands, preparing to speak with the affected students, HCU management and government officials. However, the police intervened, stating that the BJP leaders did not have permission to do so.
A heated argument ensued between the leaders and the police leading to a tense standoff, during which some top BJP leaders were placed under house arrest. Eventually the police also arrested the leaders and took them to a police station.
As per reports, many student unions have called for a boycott of classes today and have decided to intensify their protests.
Meanwhile, the Congress government has reiterated that there would be no walking back on the decision on sale of the land, regardless of opposition or challenges.
