Hyderabad | 13th February 2011
Unidentified criminals managed to strike gold, literally, when they whisked away a suitcase containing 1.6 kgs gold and Rs. 13 lakhs in cash from a goldsmith in West Godavari district on Sunday.

According to Sub-Inspector T Suryanarayana, the theft took place when the goldsmith, identified as B Balaji was heading towards Vijayawada from Bhimavaram town in a state road transport corporation bus.

Balaji had come from Coimbatore to Vijayawada and Bhimavaram to purchase gold jewellery from goldsmiths.

The goldsmith used to melt the gold and make new ornament which he sold to his clients in North India and Coimbatore.

After purchasing gold in Bhimavaram, Balaji was heading towards Vijayawada in a RTC bus. He had kept the suitcase containing the jewellery and the cash on the overhead luggage rack.

Unfortunately, the goldsmith dozed off during the journey.

On reaching Elurupadu in Kalla mandal, the goldsmith noticed that his precious cargo was missing.

Balaji lodged a complaint in this regard at Kalla police station.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bhimavaram, formed a special team and alerted the East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna district police.
