The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) today issued a gazette notification on the
recently held GHMC elections.
In the notice, dated January 16, 2020, it published the names of all the 150 victorious corporators of the civic body's Executive Council (EC).
The newly-elected members will be sworn in within one month of the issuance of the notification, and the election of the GHMC mayor and deputy mayor will be held after the conclusion of the new corporators' oath-taking ceremony.
The release of the notice comes after the BJP repeatedly came down heavily on the SEC for allegedly delaying the process of the formation of the GHMC's new EC intentionally. In fact, a delegation of the party's leaders, headed by BJP state chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar, had recently
handed over a representation to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, urging her to issue directions to the SEC and the TRS government to expedite the formation of the new GHMC Council.
Of a total of 150 seats in the GHMC's Executive Council, the TRS won 56 seats, the BJP won 48, the MIM won 44, and the Congress won two. Taking full responsibility for the Congress' underwhelming performance in the election, TPCC head N Uttam Kumar Reddy had
tendered his resignation. This had sent the already-weakened party into a tizzy - the Congress high command has
still not been able to find a replacement for Reddy.
