Following much anger over the delay in the organisation of the elections of the new GHMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) today announced that the elections for both the posts would be held on February 11, a day after the end of the present body's term.
The election body added that the swearing-in of the newly-elected GHMC corporators would also take place on the same day.
"A top IAS official will monitor the oath-taking of the GHMC's 150 newly-elected corporators on February 11 at 11 am. This will be followed by the election of the GHMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor at 12:30 pm," a SEC circular stated.
SEC chief C Partha Sarathi issued the relevant notifications in this regard.
"The elections for the post of the GHMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor will follow the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected corporators. However if that is not possible due to time constraints, the elections will be conducted in the GHMC office on February 12," he said.
The SEC head also issued instructions to the concerned officials to make all the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the oath-taking ceremony as well as the elections.
Both the TRS regime and the SEC had been facing
much backlash following the delay in administering the oath of office to the 150 newly-elected GHMC corporators, who had been elected more than a month ago (on December 1).
