The OU Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called for a 48-hour bandh following the suicide of a student, Venugopal, over the Telangana issue. Students have refused to write exams, and are now raising their pitch for the formation of a separate state of Telangana.
Venugopal Reddy, who hails from Suryapet in Nalgoda district, doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire near the Tagore Auditorium on the Osmania University campus. His friends say he was a bright student and he killed himself because he strongly believed that exams shouldn’t be written until a bill is passed in Parliament for separate statehood for Telangana.
The university had decided to continue with its schedule of exams that were to begin today, and faced ire from students who took part in the Telangana agitation.
Police have now installed blockades inside campus, and the atmosphere there is tense.
