GHMC Special Officer Somesh Kumar and senior officials of other departments on Saturday inspected the areas that are going to be closed for the use of public from January 1st, and searched for alternative routes.
Secunderabad Cantonment Board CEO Sujatha, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jithender and In-Charge Collector Sanjeevaiah also participated in the inspection.
Speaking during the inspection, Somesh Kumar said that the purpose of the visit was to settle the problems likely to be faced by the people after the closure of the roads.
However, he said that the alternative routes available were not sufficient to take the load of the traffic, and would escalate the traffic chaos.
Those areas were so congested with houses that it would not be possible to widen the roads from 30 ft. to 100 ft. as the potential for acquisition of land was very limited, he said.
For providing alternative roads, the Special Officer sought an about 60ft. to 100ft. area from the compound wall of the Cantonment area depending upon the density of the traffic.
He said that it would take at least 18 months for the laying of the roads from the date of the handing over of the place by the Army.
The suggested alternative routes are a 100 ft. road of 5 ½ kilometers along the AOC - Seethaphalmandi railway gate stretch, a 60 ft. road from Willington to the Tirumalgherry Hanuman temple, and a 100 ft. road of 2 kilometers from AOC, EMC, to R K Puram ROB.
The Cantonment CEO said that a practical approach should be adopted as nearly 2 lakh people were living in the Cantonment area.
The Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said that the alternative roads were not sufficient, and that severe problems would arise as lakhs of people had been passing through the present roads for almost 100 years now. Those people would be put to irreparable loss if the present roads are closed.
GHMC Engineer-in-Chief R Dhan Singh and other senior officials of the GHMC, Traffic Police department and Cantonment Board participated in the visit. (INN)
