As one of the most extensively-used modes of public transport turns just as hazardous, the city police have decided to put in place stringent rules to regulate the plying of auto-rickshaws in the city.
Keeping in mind the recent spate of rape and kidnap cases involving auto drivers, a notification has been issued instructing all auto drivers to register themselves, and submit xerox copies of a valid ID card, at the nearest police station. Also, they have been told to print cards with all their identification details, including their names, the vehicle number, their own ID number as a registered auto driver, etc., onto two cards. The smaller of these is to be placed inside the auto for the passenger to see, while a larger copy is to be placed on the outside, so that it is visible via CCTV cameras at signals.
Also, rules have been put in place to identify unauthorised auto rickshaws.
