Karthika Reddy Discusses GHMC Issues

The Mayor discussed various GHMC matters with the Zonal Commissioners, from pamplets littering the streets, and unauthorised structures, to revising tax rates.
Hyderabad | 17th March 2011
Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy on Wednesday stated that the officers concerned would be made responsible for the unauthorized structures coming up in their jurisdictions.

While holding a meeting with the Zonal Commissioners in her chambers on Wednesday, Karthika Reddy said that the action that would be taken against the officers responsible for unauthorized structures, as in Ayyappa Society and Sainagar in West and East Zones respectively, would be severe.

The Mayor also stated that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officers would initiate severe action against the organizations littering the city''s roads with pamphlets. In this context, she added that several organizations were seized and heavy penalties were laid on various institutions in Ameerpet. She advised the officers to place a transit lorry in each circle to lift debris from the roads.

While discussing the BPS scheme, the officers had suggested that they should be given enough time to verify applications before the applicants are told to pay the required fees. They pointed out that if the BPS fees are paid on the last date, there is always a chance of rejection.

On a different topic, the Mayor said that she would request the government to accord permission to GHMC for the filling up of ACP, TPS, AE, sanitary supervisors, food inspectors and other field functionary posts to enable the successful functioning of the organisation.

After a discussion with the Zonal Commissioners, Karthika Reddy said that the amount collected from property tax and trade licenses was more than what it was at the same time last year.

She opined that if a road-wise database is prepared, more establishments would come under the collection net, and the trade licenses' collection would improve.

During the meeting, it was suggested that a survey should be conducted within a cut-off date, and that it should it continuously updated. It was also advised that tax rates be revised. Officers brought to the Mayor’s notice that 80% of the educational institutions were not paying for trade licenses, saying that they had applied for an exemption.

The Zonal Commissioners also promised the Mayor that they would accord sanctions to the corporators' budget before March 31st.

The Mayor informed that the GHMC would inaugurate Mahila Bhavans from March 25th, and she asked the Zonal Commissioners to identify open lands in consultation with local corporators for building the new Mahila Bhavans. She also instructed the Zonal Commissioners to inspect Citizen Service Centres once a month.

The Mayor also asked the Zonal Commissioners to ensure that the ban on plastics is implemented in major parks.
