Former GHMC Mayor Banda Kartika Reddy was taken into police custody on Saturday, in connection with a land dispute in Secunderabad.
GHMC authorities tried to take some land belonging to the Lalapet Pochamma temple, and construct a compound wall to separate the adjoining property. This resulted in a heated argument between the locals and the authorities.
Kartika Reddy came to the spot and opposed the decision of the GHMC authorities to reduce the land allotted to the temple. When the situation turned tense, GHMC authorities called the police. They arrested 200 locals, including the former Mayor, and shifted them to the Bollaram police station.
There has been a long dispute over the Pochamma temple land. The dispute had even gone to court. (INN)
