A sting operation by a well-known media house, in collaboration with Ongole Health Centre, led to the arrest of Ekambaram, who was caught red handed in the act of trying to traffic 14-year-old Swapna.
The hospital personnel called Ekambaram, who negotiated a price of Rs. 14,500 for a 14-year-old girl. It was only when he, along with 4 other men, brought the young girl from Tirupati to Ongole, that he realised he had been set up.
The victim, Swapna, told the police that a woman living near her home had told her that Ekambaram has a well paying job for her. Lured by the money, she reportedly accompanied Ekambaram without too many questions. The Ongole Health Centre has currently taken the girl under its wing.
Thus caught in the act of human trafficking, that too of a minor girl, Ekambaram has been arrested, and has been taken to 2 Town Police station in Ongole. Upon questioning, he owned up responsibility for the crime, and said that he had been doing this heinous trade as there was money in it, and he wasn't good at much else.
