Several engineering and science experts from the JNTU and affiliated universities today spoke up on the recent spate of collapsing buildings in Hyderabad including the Nanakramguda building accident in which five persons died, and blamed poor engineering and the lackadaisical approach of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for the accidents.
Speaking to the media, the experts listed out the various reasons why newly constructed buildings in Hyderabad and Secunderabad are collapsing like decks of cards. They said that structural inadequacy, substandard material, digging into foundations, and overlapping of foundations can raze buildings in seconds after their construction.
They opined that the reason why there were so many building accidents these days was lack of professionals on ground. They claimed that builders were relying on masons to design and construct structures instead of involving engineers and architects. High cost and invalid permits are being cited by the experts as the reasons behind not employing professionals.
Speaking on the Nanakramguda accident, they opined that the main reason must be the overlap between the building's foundation with a neighbouring foundation.
They also said that builders and planners are not giving technical details of the building or its foundations to concerned authorities and engineers.
There was a dire need for the GHMC to track down all such illegal constructions and demolish them before further lives are lost, they said.
