KCR Waives Rs 423-Crore Power, Water Bill Arrears
The waiver includes Rs 128 crores in electricity bills and Rs 295 crores in water bills. Some six lakh families under the GHMC purview will benefit.
Hyderabad | 3rd December 2015
In a significant development to woo the people living in the GHMC limits (the GHMC elections are due this month or the next), Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today announced the waiver of arrears of power and water bills amounting to Rs 423 crores.
However, the Chief Minister cautiously refrained from releasing a GO as that would violate the code of conduct of the MLC elections.
KCR first held a meeting with the ministers of Greater Hyderabad like Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav and T Padma Rao Goud, and officials of the water and power departments. He discussed the issue with them before reportedly taking the decision.
The waiver includes Rs 128 crores in electricity bills and Rs 295 crores in water bills. Some six lakh families under the GHMC purview will benefit from this decision.
KCR felt that poor people using just 50 units to 100 units of power were not in a position to pay the bills and that the step would help them. Some 3 lakh poor people living in the GHMC area are to benefit from this step.
The waiver was a step to offer better services and not to seek any benefit, KCR said.
Since the election code exists currently, KCR asked officials not to release a GO in this regard. The government would issue a GO after the MLC elections, he added.
