Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday announced a scheme for farmers, in which interest on loans will be waived off for those who avail themselves of loans of less then Rs. 1 lakh.
Inaugurating the much publicised Indira Jala Prabha scheme at Jangalapalli village (Yerragondapalem mandal, Prakasam district), along with Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Chief Minister said that the scheme would benefit 95 lakh farmers in the Rabi season.
He said that the interest waiver would be given for farmers who pay their instalments on time.
Under the Indira Jala Prabha scheme, he said, 10 lakh acres of fallow lands will be made cultivable to benefit SC/ST beneficiaries in 22 districts of the state, except Hyderabad.
He said that about Rs. 1,800 crore will be spent to irrigate and cultivate 10 lakh acres of fallow lands by providing water from bore-wells and other water structures.
Kiran Kumar Reddy said that the one-rupee-a-kilo-rice scheme to be implemented from 1 November would benefit about 2.26 crore people in the state.
He also reiterated his government's claim that 5 lakh employment opportunities would be created for youth by upgrading their skills every year.
Meanwhile, some workers allegedly belonging to YSR Congress party raised slogans against the Chief Minster, alleging that he has failed to implement the schemes of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. However, with police intervention, they were taken away from the venue. (INN)
