The GHMC today razed several more illegal constructions including government buildings and its own structures.
Continuing its demolition drive for the third consecutive day, the GHMC, with the help of 18 of its demolition squads, razed several more illegal structures in 24 circles under the GHMC limits.
As per reports, over 300 unauthorized structures were demolished during the past two days. Demolition squads bull-dozed several unlawfully constructed buildings, floors and pillars along the stormwater drains at several places in the city.
Continuing the process, the GHMC officials, escorted by police personnel, continued the drive in Ramanthapur, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Indira Nagar, the Manjira road, Matrusri Nagar and Suraksha Colony, and in many other places.
They also removed encroachments along drains in Vivekananda Nagar in Kukatpally. Road Number 2 in the KPHB colony and some unlawful constructions along the PVNR Expressway were also demolished by the squads.
The GHMC's helpline has received over 120 complaints so far regarding the presence of illegal structures. To the surprise of officials and the people, several government structures including the Telangana Tourism department's office, which encroached around 24 acres of land near the Ramammakunta lake in Gachibowli, were also found to be built without government permissions.
At Patancheru, as per reports, the GHMC itself violated safety standards as it built a kilometer-long walking track near the bed of the tank, causing water blockades. The National Green Tribunal had earlier objected to the construction of this track.
The GHMC intends to demolish these, too.
According to the fresh estimates, the recent heavy rains damaged 178.973 km of roads in more than 1,200 places. Responding to this, the GHMC has deployed several of its officials and asked them to coordinate with the government's engineering department and restore all the damaged stretches. Over 30 engineers are currently monitoring the restoration works.
Meanwhile, the Telangana government has started making arrangements for accommodating poor families who were living in illegal structures in JNNURM and Vambay flats. It is estimated that 3,640 flats are ready for rehabilitation.
