Hyderabad | 26th September 2016
On day two of the GHMC's initiative to demolish all illegal settlements constructed along storm water drains in Hyderabad, Telangana Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao directed the officials of the revenue and irrigation departments to set up a joint task force and digitally provide the details of all the illegal structures constructed along tanks and storm water drains in Hyderabad that ought to be demolished.
In order to ease communication between the municipal bodies and the government, the minister said that he would create a tele-network of all municipalities and hold a teleconference within a week.
Meanwhile, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy inspected several tanks in the South Zone of the city and inquired about the measures that were being taken to prevent their flooding. Accompanied by Zonal Commissioner Srinivas Reddy and Deputy Commissioner Dasarath, and a team of government appointed civil engineers, the GHMC Commissioner inspected the downstream areas of the Mir Alam tank and gave instructions to demolish all illegal constructions along the drains leading to it. The storm waters from the Mir Alam drains entered the Nehru Zoological Park and flooded it, forcing the officials to shut down the zoo indefinitely.
Later, Reddy visited Rashid Colony in Ali Nagar where two houses had been constructed illegally along a sewer line in the Palle lake. As a result, the width of the drains narrowed down from 40 feet to just two feet, leading to the inundation of 50 houses in the area.
