GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that the sudden rains accompanied by strong gales that lashed the city on Tuesday night and the 96 mm rainfall recorded in Central zone areas including Yousufguda, Srinagar Colony and others had resulted in serious damage to trees.
The rain lasted for one-and-a-half hour, between 11 pm Tuesday and 1 am Wednesday. The GHMC, police and other connected departments and emergency teams swung into action immediately and tackled the emergency situation working through the night, and, as per the Commissioner, almost all the works have been completed.
Reddy said that some 291 trees had gotten uprooted and the GHMC emergency teams had cleared them. 32 electric poles had also gotten dislocated or fallen, and all the poles were removed and power supply restored by the emergency teams, he added. The GHMC had also identified 54 water stagnation points, and all of them were cleared in the morning, he said. The main cause of the water stagnation were plastic and other waste materials which were being dumped on the main roads, he said.
As the rain occurred during the night, there were no traffic gridlocks, the Commissioner said.
The Commissioner appealed to the citizens not to throw plastic and other waste materials on the roads as water flow into the manhole points was being obstructed. He also appealed to the owners of shops to inform the concerned Assistant Engineers or emergency teams about any water stagnation points in front of their shops so that the teams may immediately tackle the problems.
