Upon being requested by the Telangana government, and with the IMD and Skymet forecasting more rains over the next several days, the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) sent teams today that swung into action and began relief and rescue works in rain-ravaged Hyderabad.
Six teams of the NDRF, each comprising 40 personnel, have reached the city for rescue and relief operations, in addition to multiple units of the Army.
Four units of the Army have been deployed in Begumpet, Nizampet, Hakimpet and Alwal where dozens of residential areas remained flooded for the fourth consecutive day. They have set up a control room at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) head office.
The Defence Department said that the Army, in coordination with the GHMC and NDRF officials, was closely monitoring the situation on the ground round-the-clock. It said that its units were already on track to provide relief material and medical aid in the slum areas of Alwal. Backup units would be deployed when necessary.
Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao and other ministers along with some GHMC officials visited some of these areas late on Friday night and on Saturday morning, and thanked the Army and the NDRF for responding to their call.
