In a rare display of alertness and bravery, a Home Guard of the Hyderabad City Police saved the life of a woman who jumped into the Hussain Sagar lake to commit suicide.
The incident occurred on Saturday at around 4pm.
When the Lake Mobile jeep was patrolling the Necklace road, the driver, B Sailu, saw a young lady jumping into the Hussain Sagar Lake from the bridge near the P V Ghat.
As there was no time to call the divers who were present at the Lumbini Park area, Sailu jumped after the lady.
Sailu swam for about 30 metres before he could reach the lady. He was able to bring the lady out, who, by the time, had become unconscious.
An ambulance was summoned, and the lady shifted to Gandhi Hospital.
The woman has been identified as A Sangeetha, aged about 30 years. She is a resident of Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, and works at the GVK One Mall at Road No. 1, Banjara Hills.
The reasons that led her to attempt suicide are not yet known.
According to DCP Central Zone Dr. Akun Sabharwal, this was the 67th life saved by the Lake Police since 1 February 2011. (INN)
