The Langar Hauz police, along with the Commissioner's Task Force West Zone officers, solved the double murder mystery of two women with the arrest of a GHMC sweeper Ankur Giri, 34, and recovered a pair of gold earrings and a mobile phone from the accused.

Victims Yadamma alias Ramulamma, 50, and Sumithra, 45, were brutally murdered by Giri on January 21 for wrongful gain under the limits of the Langer Hauz Police Station. Giri, who was working as a GHMC sweeper at Chandrayangutta, met the two women at a toddy compound at Dattunagar in Kanchanbagh and told them that he knew how to perform special poojas and that he could train them in black magic. Believing him, the two women followed him to the Musi riverbed in Langer Hauz, where he attacked them with a granite stone resulting in their instant deaths. Later, he dumped the bodies in the river and left the place.

On the next day, the Langer Hauz police received a complaint from one M Sunder Singh, a farm labourer, saying that on January 21 at 3 pm he stepped into the Musi river to fetch water and found the bodies of two females. The police then rushed to the spot and extricated the bodies from the river.

The investigation that followed resulted in the identification of the culprit as Ankuri Giri alias Giri Amma, and the police arrested him on January 29. Giri had turned a Siva Satti about ten years back and had started performing pujas in temples. In 2010 he started working as a sweeper in GHMC's Chandrayangutta Circle. On the evening of January 21, Giri went to a toddy compound in Dathu Nagar, Kanchanbagh, and saw the deceased women consuming toddy there. He observed that the women were wearing gold ornaments, and decided to steal the ornaments by physically eliminating the women. He befriended them by saying that he was a Shiva Satti having spiritual powers, and offered to teach the duo special pujas, and consumed toddy along with them.

Later he took the victims to an isolated place near Pillar No 118 through Pisal Banda in an autorickshaw. There the victims and Giri consumed toddy again. Then he picked up a big stone and killed the women by bashing it on their heads. After taking their ornaments and a cell phone, he tied the bodies with a sari and dumped them into the Musi and left.
